Winterizing Your Home

It’s that time of year. Leaves are turning. There’s a shift in temperature. And people are in fall clean up mode getting ready for winter. As you rake up the leaves, and start winterizing your house, use this as an opportunity to also look at your water sources.

• Any drips or leaks?
• Showerhead build up?
• What about hard water stains?
• Is your skin staying hydrated- or getting dryer?
• Have you checked out your local water quality report?
• What about your drinking water? Is it still clear and free of particles?

Build up, cloudy drinking water, dry skin, water stains… these are all signs that you may need a water filter or a whole house conditioner.

Investing in water softening and conditioning, may seem like a huge investment, especially if you google hard water and learn that it is at most a nuisance and that it’s really not all that bad. The problem with “not that bad” is that the little piece that is bad eventually becomes “the bad.” So what starts off as a nuisance ends up turning into a bigger problem. Leaving lint in your dryer every once in a while may not be bad but it impacts the quality of the machine in how quickly it dries clothes and how long the machine stays effective. Not to mention that eventually too much lint buildup becomes a fire hazard.

Similarly with hard water after a while you notice that you have a funny smell in your wate, or that your morning coffee just doesn’t taste right. Or that your shower pressure is off. These are still small but when it starts leading to bigger things like replacing appliances or shower heads or your water heater has so much buildup that it’s not functioning as well then you’re looking at bigger costs. And because water runs throughout your entire house and affects all aspects of your daily life what may start off as replacing something small, like a coffee maker, leads to bigger and ongoing expenses like purchasing bottled water and replacing larger appliances or other plumbing issues.
